The Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital is one of the few centres staffed and equipped to offer cardiac surgery services to both children and adults. With a dedicated team of locally based cardiac surgeons, paediatric and adult cardiologists, anaesthetists, intensivists, cardiopulmonary physiotherapists, perfusionists, well trained nurses and various other support staff, we are able to treat a wide range of heart ailments requiring surgery as well as take proper care of you before, during and after cardiac surgery. Examples of heart conditions which have been successfully operated upon in our hospital include

• Patent ductus arteriosus (PDA)
• Atrial septal defect (ASD)
• Ventricular septal defect (VSD)

Apart from heart surgery, we also offer a wide range of procedures for other chest, lung and oesophageal conditions. These include

1. Lung and oesophagus cancer surgery such as lobectomy and pneumonectomy (surgical removal of all or part of a diseased lung) and oesophagectomy (surgical removal and replacement of the food pipe or oesophagus)
2. Non-cancer lung and oesophagus surgery such as those caused by infections, injuries and others
3. Surgical removal of other types of growths in the chest
4. Reconstruction of the chest wall in chest wall deformities and diseases
5. Reconstruction of vascular disease such as aortic aneurysms and peripheral artery aneurysms
6. Bypass surgery for peripheral artery disease causing significant pain in the legs or arm
